Featured Wines from Cas’Amaro
The 2023 Porco Espinho ('porcupine') (13% ABV) is a blend of Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz and Jaen grapes from the Dão region. This wine is so much fun, from the well-dressed porcupine on the label to the light ruby color to the fresh palate. The Porcupine is celebrated on the label because the real ones in the vineyard eat enough insects to allow for natural viticultural methods. The grapes are hand harvested, undergo a cool fermentation and are aged on the lees in stainless steel for 8 months. The aromas are of cherry, plum, currant and forest floor with well-integrated tannins and some volcanic earthiness on the palate. EU Vegan certification. Pair with hard cheeses, pasta, pizza and pork. 13,000 bottles produced. Suggested retail price = $14.
The 2021 Madame PioTinto Reserva (13.5% ABV) from Lisboa is the producer’s homage to his mother and features 100% Tinta Miuda grapes. The 2019 vintage won a Gold medal at the 34th Mundus Vini Grand International Wine competition in 2024. With a bright, deep ruby color, and aromas of plum, dark chocolate, coffee and forest floor, it reminds us of a Bordeaux blend. The elegant tannins and long finish would pair well with roasts and game. 2,080 bottles produced. Suggested retail price = $28.
The 2021 Madame Pio Reserve (12.5% ABV) is an homage to mothers and comes from the Lisboa region. This is a single varietal wine showcasing the elegant and sophisticated Arinto grape, sometimes called the ‘Queen of White Grapes’ and known for its vibrant acidity, citrus notes and excellent aging potential. The label celebrates special memories from the producer’s childhood with his mother. It’s an affordable alternative for those who enjoy French Chardonnay. It is aged in new barrels for 6 months followed by bottle aging for 4 months before release. It has notes of Meyer lemon, pineapple and sea minerals with a long finish. We would serve this with shellfish, hard cheese or roast chicken. 1,100 bottles produced. Suggested retail price = $30.
The 2022 Mitologia (13% ABV) is from the Dão DOP region. This is a single varietal wine showcasing the complexity of the full-bodied Encruzado grape. It is aged in new barrels for 6 months followed by bottle aging for 4 months before release. It has notes of passionfruit, pineapple, spice and flint with a long finish. This is a fantastic wine for a roast chicken or a traditional Thanksgiving meal, with enough acidity to cut through the richness of the dishes. We would also serve this with strong cheese, swordfish, tuna or game birds. 1,550 bottles produced. Suggested retail price = $28.
The 2022 Caminho Touriga Nacional (13.5% ABV) from Dao is a fantastic example of this grape (Touriga Nacional). It won a Gold medal at the 34th Mundus Vini Grand International Wine competition in 2024. Touriga Nacional is widely considered Portugal’s finest and most important red grape variety, and has many similarities to Cabernet Sauvignon. The Dao is a sun-drenched region where the grapes can fully ripen while the careful attention in the vineyard and the winery means the wine retains all the floral, herbal and lively red fruit notes with silky tannins. Pair this with grilling, roasting and BBQ- think steak tips, carne asada, and barbacoa. 3,400 bottles produced. Suggested retail price = $20.
The 2022 Tres Corujas (‘three owls’) Tinto (12.5% ABV) is a blend of Bastardo, Camarate and Tinta Miuda grapes. The label celebrates the three owls that were auspiciously protecting the barn at the first property that Cas’Amaro purchased. This wine is a great showcase of the Lisboa region’s terroir, using indigenous grapes, native yeasts and spontaneous fermentation. It is aged in concrete for one year, producing a wine with rounded tannins and balanced acidity. Its ruby color and aromas of redcurrant, cherry, violets and herbs remind us of a Barbera or Cabernet Franc. This wine is so vibrant, we think it’s best served at cellar temperature (55 - 60oF or 12 - 14oC). Pair with pulled pork, steak tacos or spaghetti bolognese. This wine has EU certification as organic and vegan. 2,500 cases produced. Suggested retail price = $15.
